Beneath the Ashes of the Reef

Only 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, while nearly half ends up in landfills, breaking down into microplastics that seep into water and soil, choking the environment. Oceans bear the brunt, with plastics suffocating coral reefs and increasing coral disease by 20 times.

This installation is inspired by the life cycle of corals, it reimagines the bleached corals as white translucent 3D-printed forms made from upcycled PET bottle filaments. Inside, rotating spheres in vibrant hues represent coral spawning bundles—the beginning of life. The internal light animates these spheres, casting colorful, lively shadows onto their exterior, revealing the life and hope that is hidden within the bleached corals.

By blending the fragility of marine ecosystems with the resilience embodied in recycled materials, the piece juxtaposes the beauty of life with the consequences of our habits. It invites the audience to rethink our daily habits and reduce the use of plastic bottles.

What is Coral Spawning?

Coral spawning is a fascinating reproductive process where coral colonies release gamete bundles into the water, often in a synchronized mass event. This "underwater snowstorm" is triggered by environmental cues like water temperature, lunar cycles, and day length.
